Voices of the Strait, documentary film

Thursday, August 26, 7:30 PM,
in the
Natural History Classroom

Come see, “Voices of the Strait”, a short documentary of interviews with people who have lived 70 years or so on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. What’s changed? What have we lost? What would they do to restore it? Produced by Mountainstone Productions of Port Townsend, with support from the Feiro Marine Science Center and the Puget Sound Partnership. Also showing will be a 6 minute short on voices of the scuba community, by PA high school graduate Cameron Little.
A panel discussion with the filmmakers and some of the interviewees will follow. Free Admission.

It will be open from Sept. 1 through Dec. 31, 2010 as part of the Natural History Exhibit .

Through video, photographs and text panels, the exhibit focuses on the interactions between people and whales in the Northwest -- from the first peoples' attitudes of fear and respect, through the early orca captures for Sea World in the 1960's and 1970's, to contemporary research and efforts to protect orcas.

NEW Flotsom Tank Display
GOT FLOTSAM?

Are you a collector of beach "treasures" that were just too "good" to leave there? Perhaps you're curious about what's been washing up on our beaches. If so, the Port Townsend Marine Science Center now has a place to display your flotsam findings. The display created by Rachel and Joe Gaspers will be changed (and objects returned to finders) every couple of months as new "junk" comes in. The Gaspers feel that there is much to be learned about what ends up in our oceans, and how it gets to where it washes ashore.

If you are a beach walker who comes upon strange and interesting objects that have landed here, consider showing them off in this new display. Contact: Rachel at lindarjg@gmail.com.
