Frequently Asked Questions
The PTMSC Citizen Science Program has been working on scientific research and monitoring projects with volunteers since the 1980's.When our Foss Discovery Lab opened in 2005, the door also opened to many new research initiatives which we now carry out partnership with other organizations.
How can I get involved?
We have projects for people at all levels. Some citizen science volunteers monitor underwater sounds at home on their computers while washing the dishes. Others commit to weekly lab sessions, learning to identify and monitor toxin-producing algae species. Check out some of the projects that are described below. Contact Jean Walat, Volunteer and Citizen Science Coordinator, to learn which projects have current volunteer openings.
What happens to the data collected by volunteers?
Depending on the project, the data is sent to partner organizations for combination with data collected elsewhere. The data is analyzed. The results may become part of a larger database of observations and/or be published in a scientific paper. Sometimes the data are used to affect public policy or to determine the safety of shellfish collection.
Can groups and organizations participate? Some projects can be taken on by groups or students.
