Dungeness Crab Larva Monitoring project
PTMSC is providing volunteers to sample sites from Sequim down to the Hood Canal Bridge for this study conducted by the Suquamish tribe. The purpose of the study is to investigate one of the possible causes of the decline in the Dungeness crab population in Hood Canal.
How it works: Volunteers have deployed larvae collectors throughout the route from the Pacific Ocean to Hood Canal. They check the collectors at least weekly to determine when and where crab larvae are found. The size of the megalops at any given time can be used to help identify its their source, since megtalops that are carried in from the Pacific Ocean are larger than the ones originating in Puget Sound. Investigators hope to learn the extent of crab larval recruitment from the Pacific coast.
Number of volunteers: 2
