How the Orca Skeleton Came Together
In early 2011, a team of 25 volunteers and PTMSC staff members began an intense but exhilarating month, beginning with painstaking preparation of every bone and culminating in putting final touches on the fully articulated skeleton. This process, led by articulation specialist Lee Post, of Homer Alaska, was highly unusual in how much of the work was carried out not by scientists, but by community members, who lent their time and many diverse skills to the project.
The articulated skeleton will become part of a new exhibit at PTMSC on orcas and the challenges they face. |
