US Bancorp gives $2500 to PTMSC for scholarships to new exhibit
Port Townsend, WA—The Port Townsend Marine Science Center is creating a new winter exhibit on plastics in the marine environment which will open in February 2008. Roughly 500 students from across the North Olympic Peninsula will be provided with free programming thanks in part to US Bancorp contributing $2500 toward scholarships for students.
“We’re very appreciative of the contribution made by US Bancorp toward bringing students to our upcoming exhibit on marine plastics,” said JoAnne Heron, development director for the PTMSC. “Their donation will enable us to bring at least five classes of students to the exhibit. Scholarships normally cover a combination of bussing and instruction.”
The new winter exhibit will help create awareness of plastics pollution in our Puget Sound waters and help educate young people about things everyone can do as individuals to help address the problem. One of the goals of the PTMSC is to provide experiential education for all students in the area, including outlying rural communities. Educating students raises the level of awareness and understanding of the marine environment in their families and communities.
With school funding cutbacks over the past few years, scholarships to bring students to the marine science center are more important than ever. Schools wishing to apply for scholarship assistance to attend the winter exhibit on plastics in the marine environment are invited to call the PTMSC at 360.385.5582, ext.102.
Celebrating 25 years of coastal education and conservation in 2007, the Port Townsend Marine Science Center is devoted to understanding, preserving and teaching about our marine and shoreline environment as guardians for a sustainable future. Located on the beach at Fort Worden State Park, the PTMSC offers two public exhibits: the Marine Exhibit features large touch pools and aquaria, and the Natural History Exhibit highlights the rich zone where land meets sea. Both exhibits are open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Admission to the exhibits is $5 for adults, $3 for youth and free to PTMSC members. The PTMSC also offers a wide variety of educational programs and special events.
