Concerned about plastics in the ocean? Global warming? The next big earthquake? The Port Townsend Marine Science Center (PTMSC) is too. If those are topics that interest you, or perhaps shore birds, rocks or fossils, the PTMSC would like to invite you to participate with other like-minded, friendly, curious people, and consider being a docent or exhibit guide at the PTMSC’s Natural History Exhibit (NHE). New and experienced docents are welcome to attend two training sessions, Tuesday, January 29th and Tuesday, February 5th, in the NHE from 5:45 to 8 p.m.

“The first session will include an overview of working with the public, an introduction to the NHE and practice in working with the exhibits it houses,” said Jean Walat, PTMSC volunteer coordinator. “There will also be an introduction to a new exhibit on animal calls. In the second session, PTMSC Marine Educator Chrissy McLean will introduce a new winter exhibit on Plastics in the Environment.”

The new Plastics in the Environment exhibit will assist in creating awareness of pollution from plastics in our Puget Sound waters, explore how plastics get in the food chain and are distributed by currents, and provide solutions about how people of all ages can do things every day to help address the problem. Also in the second session, Judy D’Amore will demonstrate how to interpret the PTMSC’s new seismograph exhibit that records earthquake activity around the world.

Expert knowledge isn’t required or expected in order to be a PTMSC docent; just the willingness to learn along with local residents and visitors from all over the world as they explore our Northwest environment. To reserve a space for either or both of the docent training sessions, call Jean Walat at the PTMSC at 360.385.5582, ext. 112, or e-mail her at jwalat@ptmsc.org.

The Port Townsend Marine Science Center is devoted to understanding, preserving and teaching about our marine and shoreline environment as guardians for a sustainable future. Located on the beach at Fort Worden State Park, the PTMSC offers two public exhibits: the Marine Exhibit (ME) features large touch pools and aquaria, and the Natural History Exhibit (NHE) highlights the rich zone where land meets sea. Both exhibits are closed during January, however, beginning February 1st, the NHE is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. and the ME is open by appointment only. Admission to the NHE is $3 for adults, $2 for youth and free to PTMSC members. The PTMSC also offers a wide variety of educational programs and special events.
