Why you should bring students to PTMSC

PTMSC is known for providing science education through unique and high-caliber hands-on education. Staff members work closely with teachers to plan classes that support their educational goals and that meet the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements, EALRs.

All programs are designed to appeal to the age group of the visiting students. Classes encourage active student participation while inviting reflection, careful observation and critical thinking. As students work together in this stimulating environment, they become “young scientists,” learning to value their own observations and evidence, and eager to share their knowledge with others.

When you can bring students to PTMSC

School visits can be arranged for any time of year, but please be advised that spring is the busiest season. Consider visiting in fall or winter.

What it will cost

Programs range in length from one hour to one week. Cost is based on the number of our instructors required and the length of time they work with your group.

Residential Programs

Consider spending 2-5 days at the Port Townsend Marine Science Center for more in-depth programing. All classes include hands-on activities and extensive scientific background – most include outdoor field experiences as well. Students think and act like scientists, developing familiarity with the processes of scientific investigation.

Fort Worden State Park offers dormitory-style housing, meals in the new Commons or delivered to field sites, a hostel, snack shop and campground. Details are available at www.olympus.net/ftworden/ or (360) 344-4435.

Day Programs

A typical one-day program can focus on themes such as Marine Ecology, Shoreline Geology, Marine Mammals, Fossils or Intertidal Beach Explorations.

Special Programs

PTMSC will also design or adapt programs to match the special abilities and interests of your students, whether Advanced Placement, arts-focused or research-based. Contact Anne Murphy at amurphy@ptmsc.org or (360) 385-5582 ext 102 to plan such a program.

All PTMSC classes are aligned with Washington State Science EALRs.

All grades

Students take an in-depth interpretive tour of both the Natural History and Marine Exhibits and engage in a hands-on mini-activity. This class lasts 90 minutes.

Collaborative classes

Our Water World
An exciting week exploring marine environments for grades 5 and 6, co-sponsored by PTMSC and Centrum Arts and Creative Education. Rich hands-on experiences integrate science and art, working with professionals in both fields. For info go to www.centrum.org.

Peninsula College Class: Intro to Pacific NW Marine Life

“This is a great opportunity for people to learn about our local beaches and tide pooling, especially now that low tide season is upon us,” said Moffett. “It’s a good time to refresh yourself about what can be found on the beach, beach etiquette and to learn about exciting topics like the pupping season for seals.”
