Workshop on Marine Ecology &
Conservation for Teachers

Get HANDS-ON experience with intertidal animals on the beaches of Fort Worden State Park and in the Marine Science Center. SAIL and live aboard the 101' historic schooner Adventuress, studying wind, tides and currents of Puget Sound.

  • Explore the world of marine science at the Port Townsend Marine Science Center
  • Sail aboard the Adventuress Schooner, owned and operated by Sound Experience
  • Take home great standards-based activities for K-12 classrooms in content areas ranging from biology, geology, art, chemistry, physics and language arts.

Space is available for 24 participants plus crew & instructors. Participants stay in Fort Worden State Park Conference Center facilities for the first half of the week & live aboard the Adventuress for the second half of the week. Classes take place in the field and in our lab/classroom facilities, and include a shift on a research vessel.  Ample opportunities provided for creativity and discussion of classroom applications.

Onshore the focus is on marine life, habitats, plankton & physical oceanography.  Offshore you study basic navigation, sailing (physics & theory), tide & currents, marine mammals, oceanography, sand studies & other related topics.

Tuition is $650 (a $300 stipend is available for Washington State Teachers), which includes instruction, curriculum materials, meals & board. Check with your district for teacher development funds.

  • 5 credits are available through City University, Seattle, Washington
  • $39 per undergraduate credit and $49 per graduate credit
  • 50 available clock hours
  • Registration for credit or clock hours takes place on the first day of the workshop
