Education
Classes 2006-2007:
Who we are
The Port Townsend Marine Science Center is a 25-year old educational organization offering exciting, field-based experiences to students of all ages. Dedicated professional educators, assisted by interns and trained volunteers, share their passion and knowledge of the marine environment through classes, beach investigations, organized tours, residential programs, teacher workshops and summer camps.Where we are
PTMSC is located on Admiralty Inlet at the confluence of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound. Sandy beaches border the PTMSC’s two historic buildings on the grounds of Fort Worden State Park. Short walks take students to rocky beaches, glacial bluffs, a brackish lagoon or a freshwater pond. What we offer
PTMSC offers an integrated introduction to Puget Sound and Straits shorelines and nearshore ecology. All classes are aligned with Washington State Science EALRs.The Marine Exhibit is located on a pier in an historic warehouse. Touch pools and aquaria provide access to invertebrates and fish for study at close range. A classroom features a variety of tools including dissecting microscopes for every student, a video microscope and an underwater video camera.
The Foss Maritime Discovery Lab opened in April 2005. This lab provides an environment where students can create their own research projects, participate in ongoing research projects and gain experience using lab and research equipment.
The Natural History Exhibit features shorelines including bluffs, beaches and animals living along the shore. Exhibits tell the story of how the Washington coastline came to be, with displays on fossils, glaciers, faults and earthquakes. A special interactive exhibit, the Washington Geo-Puzzle, relates plate tectonics to the growth of Washington’s land area through time. The exhibit also features collections of sand, rocks and fossils for class use and a seismograph that records earthquakes as they happen.
