Stone Stories: The Rock Cycle (60 minutes)
Students examine beach rocks and speculate on ways rocks form. Through discussion, diagrams and dynamic activities, they learn about the rock cycle and identify igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Students create a story of how a specific rock might have formed.

Giants of the Ice Age (60 minutes)
Students examine objects left behind by mammals that lived here during recent ice ages. They learn interesting facts about Pleistocene mammals and the times they lived in, and then make life-sized sand sculptures of these creatures on the beach.

Beach Explorations (90 minutes)
Students walk along a rocky shore examining the variety of intertidal plants and animals found there. Beach etiquette and the power of observation are emphasized.

Life on a Rocky Shore ( 60 minutes)
Students learn about tides and the challenges they present to marine animals. Students then explore touch pools to learn about intertidal animals living in Puget Sound.

Tails to Scales (60 minutes)
Students examine local fish and learn about the significance of different body parts. Careful drawing and observation are emphasized. Students will then discover other animals living in Puget Sound by visiting our touch pools.

Crab Lab (60 minutes)
Students observe Puget Sound crabs in detail, focusing on body shape, color and size. Observation and accurate drawing are emphasized. Students will then go on a scavenger hunt to see how many crabs they can now identify in our touch pools.
