Adventures in Marine Research

A weeklong residential workshop for teens
alternating between field based and
lab based sessions.

Summer 2008 - Field Session (space is limited) Backpacking on the Outer Coast

Campers spend a week backpacking on the outer coast, learning about current research projects designed to assess the health of our marine environment while exploring tidepools and watching marine birds and mammals play in the nearshore. This small group will work with marine scientists and participate in several long-term research projects, then conduct their own experiments in the field.

Summer 2007 - Lab Session (space is limited) Creating Your Own Research Project

Students explored research methods in our Discovery Lab using examples from real projects around the Puget Sound, traveled to other research labs and restoration sites to meet with scientists working in the field, sailed on the 68’ Schooner Martha and snorkeled around our dock to get a better understanding of our local environment. Then, after a week of exploration, students formulated their own research hypothesis, and created and conducted an experiment with full access to all our lab equipment.
