ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATOR

The Port Townsend Marine Science Center, PTMSC, announces openings for four Environmental Educator positions sponsored by the Washington State Americorps job-training program. PTMSC facilities, located in Fort Worden State Park, include a Marine Exhibit of live, near shore animals and plants and a Natural History Exhibit featuring shorelines, past and present, with an emphasis on geology. These positions 10 ½ month positions start October 1, 2008.

DUTIES
All four positions will:

  • Serve on the PTMSC education team, leading school programs in the exhibits, labs & in the field
  • Work with the public, leading interpretive programs & informal tours
  • Develop education curriculum for school groups and the general public
  • Coordinate training programs for staff and volunteer
  • Work with & train volunteers to assist in the care of animals and exhibits
  • Maintain the Marine and Natural History Exhibits, keeping exhibits and tanks clean
  • Work in our gift shop

ASSIGNMENT
In addition to sharing the above duties, each Environmental Educator will be assigned an area of responsibility:

  • Environmental Education Coordinator:  Responsible for the collections, exhibits and events in the Natural History Exhibit. Will assist in developing exhibit materials on Plastic Pollution in the Marine Environment. Will assist the PTMSC Education Specialist in offering engaging, grade-appropriate, standards-based, field experiences for K-12 youth during the school year and for youth groups during the summer months. 
  • Marine Environmental Education Coordinator: Responsible for the care and health of the animals in the marine exhibit of live, near-shore animals.  Will develop an exhibit tank design plan and work on maintenance of our saltwater plumbing system. Will assist the PTMSC Education Specialist in offering marine based, engaging, grade-appropriate, standards-based, field experiences for the region’s K-12 youth during the school year and for youth groups during the summer months.
  • Citizen Science Program Coordinator:  Responsible for supervising experiments, analyzing samples, processing data and overseeing events in our Discovery Lab. Will promote citizen science and environmental monitoring studies by establishing partnerships with other groups working on base line monitoring. Will build community capacity for citizen involvement in monitoring and providing community educational outreach about lab topics.
  • Orca Articulation Project Coordinator:  Responsible for supervising the cleaning and articulation of our orca skeleton.  Will help coordinate professional, volunteer and educational project partners.  Will assist in the development of a new exhibit featuring the orca skeleton and our hydrophone.  Will work closely with our Marine Program Coordinator to develop and teach education programs relating to orcas, especially using our hydrophone exhibit.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be in the age range of 18 to 25.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National or Permanent Resident Alien of the United States
  • Must be able to work a minimum of 1,700 hours in 10 ½ months.
  • Must have a degree or background in Marine Biology, Invertebrate Biology, Geology, Environmental Education or related field.
  • Must be energetic, self motivated and willing to learn.
  • Must have a current CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Must have excellent verbal communication skills.
