Sandlab
Grades 4-10
Where does all the sand on a sandy beach come from? Why does the sand in Puget Sound looks so different from Hawaiian sand or sand from Death Valley?
Students use magnifiers or microscopes, a stream table and the beach itself to find out about the materials that make up sand particles. They learn about the weathering and erosional processes that shape them and carry them to the shore, and the shoreline processes that keep sand in continuous motion along the shore. |
