Plastics in the Marine Environment

Plastics in the Marine Environment
Grades 4-10

Plastic pollution is a growing threat to marine environments.  Students learn where plastic in the ocean is coming from and how it gets distributed throughout the Pacific Ocean.

They dissect an albatross bolus (similar to an owl pellet) to find out how much plastic these marine foraging birds are eating and to discover how plastic waste is impacting marine animals and ocean habitats. They then sample a beach at Fort Worden State Park to see the effect of plastic waste the local environment.

Finally, students discuss changes they can make in their own lives to help solve this problem.
