Inquiry in the Marine Lab

Inquiry in the Marine Lab
Grades 8-12

Students gain hands-on experience planning, designing and carrying out experiments based on their own questions. They begin with close observation of marine animals in our aquaria and touch pools. They discuss ways they might manipulate variables to explore the responses of animals to these changes. Then, in small groups, they choose a question of their own to investigate. They develop a hypothesis, design and conduct their experiment, collect and analyze data and share what they have learned. Students practice critical thinking, teamwork and working with scientific tools. They also find out some interesting new things about local marine life.
