Inquiry into Barnacles
Grades 4-10
Students observe the behavior of barnacles under water. They brainstorm changes they could make in the barnacles' environment that might cause a change in the barnacles' behavior. Individually or small groups, students select a variable to change and then plan and carry out an experiment to find out how the barnacles will respond. In the course of this activity students practice several important science skills including questioning, predicting, planning an experiment, and recording and interpreting results, all components of scientific inquiry. They also develop a new appreciation of barnacles as sensitive, responsive and resilient little animals.
