Crab Lab

Crab Lab
Grades 3- 4

Crabs, inherently fascinating to children, have many characteristics in common with insects and spiders. Students observe a variety of crabs, comparing and contrasting the many forms of crabs. Together they decide what characteristics all the crabs have in common. They share observations and brainstorm a list of their own questions about crabs.

The students' oservations and questions become the focus for a discussion of the biology of crabs. Students choose a crab that interests them and draw a careful picture of it, noticing its adaptations to the particular role it plays in the marine environment.
